What We Offer
EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful, evidence-based therapy for trauma and PTSD.
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of trauma, PTSD, and a range of other mental health conditions. It was developed by Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s and is now recognised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an effective treatment for PTSD.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements, taps, or tones) to help the brain process distressing memories and experiences. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require you to discuss your traumatic experiences in detail.
How Does EMDR Work?
When we experience a traumatic or distressing event, the memory can become "stuck" in the brain in a way that causes ongoing distress. EMDR helps the brain to process these memories so that they no longer cause the same level of distress.
During an EMDR session, your therapist will guide you through a structured process that involves briefly focusing on a distressing memory while simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation. Over time, the memory becomes less distressing and is integrated into your broader life experience.
What Can EMDR Help With?
EMDR has been shown to be effective for trauma, PTSD, anxiety, phobias, grief, and a range of other presentations. Our trained EMDR therapists will work with you to determine whether EMDR is appropriate for your needs.
